Nick and the Slingshot 30s Trailer from Vincent Kuan Lin on Vimeo.
Film Synopsis
After being inspired by his favourite television program, an adventurous young boy named Nick builds a makeshift slingshot and immediately sets out to go hunting in a nearby park. While in the park, Nick is harassed by a mischievous blue jay, which incites an ardent chase through the bushes. During the pursuit, a stone from Nick’s slingshot accidentally hits the blue jay and knocks it from the sky. When the bird crashes to earth, the consequences of Nick’s actions overwhelm him. He decides not only to discard his slingshot but also to learn a lesson from his reckless curiosity.
Director's Statement
I hope every viewer enjoys seeing this short film and find it fun and reflective.
This film was intentionally made with a cartoonish tone to fit the theme of the story, but it is a film more than just showing to young children. It is based on Nick’s memorable personal experience which is so impactful to him that he has kept the story in his heart since childhood. The lesson he learnt from the experience is not only for young kids but also for people of all ages. I hope everyone stays after the credit roll to see the hidden ending; it is a pleasing way to wrap up the story, for an enjoyable cartoon I think. This film is also personal to myself. The Dr. Weirdo show, the music, the cartoonish tone and many other elements in the film are from my childhood and family memories. The completion of this project is with all support from my mother and my sister Anita Lin. I also want to thank my Dad, Nick, for his amazing story.
